The natural wonder is located in the Karakum Desert of central Turkmenistan.
The pit attracts hundreds of tourists each year. It is also said to attract desert wildlife. There have been reports of local spiders being seen plunging into the pit by the thousands. They just couldn’t resist the glow of flames.
This beast hole started when locals were drilling and the equipment was so heavy it collapsed the earth beneath it creating a sinkhole of natural gas. This gas ended up killing off local animals and kept spewing into the environment so they decided to light it.
This was supposed to help the gas burn off but it’s been a flame for 40 years. Read more.
